The mission of the Stedelijk is to enrich people’s lives with modern and contemporary art and design. With our collection, exhibitions, publications, research, and educational programs, we offer new insights into the present—both on an individual and societal level.

In creating interactions between the public and art, we are inspired by dialogue with artists. We translate urgent questions about the present, past, and future—as posed by artists and identified by ourselves—into an inspiring program. In doing so, we actively manage, renew, and open up our renowned collection.

In the Netherlands, we continually redefine our leadership in the field of visual arts and design; internationally, thanks to our leading collection and programming, we can be an innovative challenger. We explore and define new paths and prefer to challenge conventions rather than confirm them. As we have always demonstrated, we place a high value on experimentation—with the aim of better understanding and commenting on the present through art and design.
